Week 16 McClelland's Sherry Finished Highland Single Malt

Well,  this is no wimpy yellow, gold color but a real healthy amber, promising good body, flavor and nose.   So let's check it out!

Ahhh, no nostril numbing  alcoholic fumes but a nice sweet round aroma.

1st sip: A nice blend of vanilla, licorice, anise and bannana, with a touch of the alcohol.   2nd sip:  ah, more of the same with some hints of sherry, dry.  A splash:  adds a touch of creme with the nice warmth in the mouth.  Ice cubes:   brings out some hazelnut and makes a nice mouthful.
Good stuff!

  1. Seems we are all a bit behind this week, but brother Ned has been in Hawaii the past week, so I figure we can cut him some slack. I'm guessing brother Rick just likes to go last...

So, a pleasant early sunset yellow, and an earthy aroma that generates a bit of hope that at least one of the McClellands has some heart. This one does, though not like a lion, more like a large herbivore. It has a nice bite, but more grinding that sharp, and some flavor reminiscent of dry cut grass.

This one won't stop you in your tracks or make you wet your pants, but you might pause to admire for a minute before moving on to whatever you were doing.

Well glass is empty, the sky is finally clear, and there is fishing and chinese food at the Procs. Until weds.....

  2. Legs: Medium

    Color: rich golden

Nose: a hint of smoke and what I call syrupy sweetness

Taste: a light surge of smoky peatness followed by the ebb of buttery sweetness

Finish: Maybe a little longer than the other McClellands. It disappears after the first taste, and then builds up a little with each successive taste. If you are looking for a long finish, keep casting ‘cause this ain’t it.

Two weeks without Scotch is king of long for my new normal. I did have a whisky sour while in Hawaii, but I admit to consuming more drinks that are appropriate with small umbrellas than not. Hey, when in Rome … As a further aside, we didn’t actually see any small umbrellas in our various fruity libations. All that aside, I prefer this McClelland’s to the others. This says more about me and my preferences than it does about the Scotch. A drop of water does not add much. This is by far the best bang for the buck of the three. Unfortunately, I have partial 70 cl bottles of the Lowland (so poor we did not even add it to the blog) and the Islay.

  3. I've gotten behind in my comments sorry...

if last weeks offering was too mild, and certainly we have had examples of too harsh, this is just about right if you ask me for an easy sipping but yet tasteful scotch. Certainly one you could introduce someone too …. not terribly expensive but good for sitting in a rocking chair watching the world go by. Oh, its not going to knock your socks off, but it has enough of a peat in my books to qualify as the real deal.
