Week - 18 Glenmorangie

Glenmorangie , Gaelic for “Vale of Tranquility”, made from water fresh from Tarlogie Springs in the Tarlogie hills was founded in 1843.  The Glenmorangie Distillery is north of Inverness, half a mile from Tain in the Highlands of Scotland and claims perfection as a result of the tallest stills in Scotland (8.0 meters).

Curiosly, Glenmorangie begins in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri, I kid you not, where Glenmorangie has its own forest to manufacture white oak casks.   These casks are first leased to Jack Daniel’s to hold bourbon for four years (no wonder our sainted mother liked Glenmorangie ).   The Original, of which we are imbibing tonight is matured in these casks, mom’s favorite is further matured in casks that matured sherry.

So.  Yes, this is another Whisky favorite of mom’s for more common occasions or people like her sons.  Thank you mom, for an excellent choice.

This original is a 10 year old with a scent of citrus and peaches.   On the tongue a hint of vanilla and fruit, or so the literature says.   I am not sure I get the hint of orange, but I sure do like the taste and the Finish is clean and smooth.  The color is a pale gold.

I don’t think I will ever tire of drinking Glenmorangie, mellow and creamy it nonetheless is distinctive.  *I* being eldest son btw, we have survived a full rotation and the month of  May is mine.  No Glenlivet I promise.

  1. Ah, Glenmorangie. The color of the sun on a cloudless spring day, and the warmth that goes along with it.

Known as a ladies scotch because of it's smoothness, yet has a full depth of flavor and character. Again, it doesn't walk on the wild side enough to make my wow list, but then, my glass is empty and I feel saddened. I'm man enough to get in touch with my softer side on any occasion this is available.

(ok, and I'm also watching American Idol, but that is different... ;>) )

  2. Color: yellow, like many a white wine

    Legs: strong

Nose: a soft, fruity scent, no wine odor here, just very pleasant

Taste: nice, no smoke or hint of peat. Some sweet fruit flavor.

    Finish: warm and lasting

As I watch my spousal over unit mix her own chocolate martini (giving me the night off), and I can’t but think I got the better aperitif. While I did not drink with my mother often enough to come to any great agreement (other than margaritas, of course), I can certainly understand why this could have been a favorite. A drop of water does not do much for the nose, maybe a little vanilla? It does bring out more of whatever flavor I am enjoying. I don’t know if it is a ladies’ scotch or not, as number 2 claims, but then again, I don’t watch American Idol either. An easy dram to enjoy and finish, which makes for a nice change vs. April. The oldest brother has come through big time, and I thank you sir.

  3. Color: a pleasing light golden yellow in the lismore..
Nose: very light hints of perhaps lemon extract – citrus and alcohol
1st sip: a tang, slight, but there, of an orange liquor – a good one. 2nd sip: warmth but still sweet. A splash – does nothing for the nose but does a a touch of creamy texture. No ice for this one.
I look forward to its sisters.
